UPCOMING Trip

Maltese Falcon HEAD Trip

Delve into the noir world of San Francisco’s mysterious underbelly brought to life by Dashiell Hammett. Walk in Sam Spade’s footsteps and view a replica of the Falcon itself.

Our adventure will begin at the Old Ship Saloon (298 Pacific Ave.) The Old Ship is San Francisco’s oldest bar. They have good food and well-crafted cocktails. It’s not far from the offices of the Spade & Archer Detective Agency and only an 11-minute walk from Embarcadero BART.

From the Saloon, we’ll walk back to California Street and ride a cable car up Nob Hill (bring your Clipper Card) to the apartment of Brigid O’Shaughnessy. Next, a walk downhill to Sam Spade’s (and Hammett’s) apartment – one of San Francisco’s literary landmarks.

We’ll duck into the Fat Man’s (Casper Gutman) hotel for a classic cocktail before taking a short walk up to the alley where Miles Archer was murdered.

Things will wrap-up at Sam Spade’s favorite restaurant, historic John’s Grill (63 Ellis St.) for a cocktail, a nosh, and a chance to visit the world’s smallest Maltese Falcon museum.

Before the trip, you’ll have homework. Watch the “Maltese Falcon” or, if you like, read the book. It’ll get you ready for the fun!

Meet at the Old Ship Saloon (298 Pacific Ave.)

12:30pm on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

The Tequila Sunrise by Boat: Sipping History by the Bay

Join us to explore the story behind one of the Bay Area's most famous (notorious) cocktail creations. The Tequila Sunrise was created in 1972 for the Rolling Stones,  you know Mick, Keith, Charlie, and Ronnie.

Our adventure will begin at 12:30pm on Saturday, July 12. The Society will gather at the historic Eagle Café (Pier 39). We'll discuss the incredible story of this former Longshoreman’s bar and Alcatrooper hangout. It’s pretty posh now.

After a sip and maybe a nosh, we’ll make the short stroll down to Pier 41 for the Blue & Gold Fleet’s Sausalito ferry and board the 1:45pm boat.

Enjoy the relaxing 30-minute cruise past Alcatraz and across the Bay. It’s an easy walk from the pier to the Trident, birthplace of the Sunrise.

Relive some  cocktail and Rock & Roll history before catching  the 4:15 ferry back to the City. From there we can stumble around in search of dinner or say “adieu” if you’re heading home.

Recap: Saturday, July 12, 2025

12:30pm - Meet at the Eagle Café

1:45pm – Ferry to Sausalito ( from Pier 41)
